Portico Quartet - Knee Deep In The North Sea
Portico Quartet have been written off by some people due to their Mercury Nomination, with the main thing levied at them that it’s a token nomination that you always get at these awards for a genre of music that is usually much lacking in representation…well not to put too fine a point on it…that’s bollocks.
These four Londoners have been nominated because the album Knee Deep In The North Sea is (the title aside) a brilliant and beautiful ride through classical music and jazz, fused together in a sweeping, yet understated style, a track where a note was wasted would sound out of place on this impeccably played and composed album, everything is done with purpose and adds value.
This is just the start for these lads, even if they don’t win the award when it’s announced, they can count me amongst many new fans gained either way.
