Elviin - Made Of
I’m not a huge fan of modern soul music as a lot of seems to have watered down the very thing that made it such a beautiful and pure form of music in the first place and replaced that quality with slick and velvety vocals that are anything but a substitute.
The quality i’m talking about is the thing that gives it it’s name…soul. The classic soul singers were good not because they had superb voices, but because they used those voices as a vehicle to sing from the heart, from deep within and you could make that emotional connection with them.
That’s missing all too often today and style wins over substance, so it’s refreshing to hear Elviin and his album Made Of. He has a good soulful voice in the style sense, but it’s his depth of emotion that he puts over that singles him out as a genuine contender.
On tracks like In Colour, Good Books, The Clock and Human Nature you believe him, you empathise with what he’s singing about and more importantly you know he’s staying true to his self. A good album that suggests he could in the future make a great album. Keep an eye on him, I certainly will be.
