We Were Promised Jetpacks - The, Cockpit, Leeds
I’d volunteered myself and my friend for this gig purely based on a couple of peoples opinion I trust on Twitter. Not something i’d usually do but there is no better feeling than catching a band who are on their way up in a really small venue.
The venue in question tonight was the small upstairs room at The Cockpit in Leeds, it’s about as tiny as they come and frequently smells of sweat! That said it’s also a venue that offers nowhere to hide for the bands as you really are up close and personal with them here and confidence is an essential element in pulling off a good performance.
First band up tonight are hard to judge on just this show, due to unfortunate circumstances half of the four piece don’t make it to the gig, so it’s left to the singer and one other member to do their best.
They play an acoustic set and it’s clear that their music is lacking the other elements, fair play to Hail Animator though they are competent and they could easily have pulled out of tonights show.
Next up is July Rising and before we’ve heard a note i’m guessing they are going to be emo naffness exemplified. Unfortunately we aren’t wrong and we quickly retreat to the bar.
People in the main though are here to see Fat Cat Records latest stars, We Were Promised Jetpacks. After a brief set up on stage they are ready to play to an almost full room.

Add to favouritesThey are quickly into their stride and it’s clear these Scottish lads have a definite belief in themselves, they know they have honed their sound and are ready to impress us with their debut album. I’d given it a quick spin the day before and was impressed, the question was if they could get the same power and majesty into the live performance.
That though wasn’t a problem at all, a visceral set was well received by the crowd, the depth of variety in their dynamic indie anthems meaning you couldn’t find a low point. While all the band are impeccable with their timing and playing, I have to say that it’s the lead singer that makes the band, he gives an energetic and captivating performance with spot on delivery for each song.
Catch them while they play the smaller venues now ladies and gentleman because these guys are going to get a lot bigger.
